At 20 years old, Lauranne Spits is discovering the Saut Herm\u00e8s the way one enters a cathedral: slightly intimidated, eyes wide open, yet already deeply immersed. Competing in the Talents Herm\u00e8s with Parel van het Russeltveld, the young Belgian is experiencing a weekend out of time, somewhere between accelerated learning and raw emotion. By her side, her brother Thibeau\u2014who has been through it before and is now established at 5* level\u2014directs, advises, fine-tunes. A family story, Grand Palais version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A setting beyond everything<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Grand Palais is not just a competition. It\u2019s a sensory experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Lauranne Spits understood that from her very first steps into the arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201cIt\u2019s quite incredible, honestly. Having the opportunity to ride in a place like this is already huge. And then you learn from everything: the riders, the way they work, how they manage their horses\u2026
You almost feel like you\u2019re living like a five-star rider, with the hotel, the shuttles\u2026 It\u2019s a bit crazy for me. (smile) It\u2019s really a different experience, and I\u2019m very grateful to have been able to come this year. I hope I can come back.\u201d <\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between two worlds, the Grand Palais arena<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Entering the ring here for the first time feels like stepping into another dimension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201cI was a bit overwhelmed. I didn\u2019t necessarily think I belonged here, or I thought it would be very difficult to get here\u2026 And in the end, I am. So yes, I was really very happy.\u201d<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there\u2019s the arena itself, unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201cYes, it\u2019s quite special. It feels like you\u2019re riding outdoors\u2026 while being indoors. There\u2019s the light, the sun\u2026 it gives a real outdoor feeling inside an indoor arena. It\u2019s quite unique. And honestly, it\u2019s spectacular to ride here.\u201d<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Parel, a partner still discovering<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By her side, Parel van het Russeltveld<\/strong>, 11 years old, is discovering it too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy mare isn\u2019t really used to this kind of atmosphere, with so much crowd. She\u2019s still a bit tense.
The first day, she was very tense, but it\u2019s getting better. Round by round, it improved. I hope she\u2019ll be at her best to finish on Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A partnership still in the making, still adjusting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201cYes, she\u2019s quite sensitive, so I know what I need to do, and not do, before going into the ring.
Even when she lacks confidence, she always tries to give her best. It\u2019s up to me to give her as much calm as possible. She always does everything for me, she\u2019s really incredible.\u201d <\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bond is there. Deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201cI got her in my last junior year, about three years ago. She was seven at the time. The idea was to progress together over bigger courses and eventually sell her later.
But my parents kept their word: they gave me time to grow with her. And today, I\u2019m here thanks to that. Without a horse, you don\u2019t come to competitions like this. So I\u2019m really grateful to still be able to count on her.\u201d<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gentle pressure and the gaze of others<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because at the Grand Palais, there\u2019s more than just fences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are expectations too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201cYes, clearly. This morning, I was quite tense, even though the course wasn\u2019t huge. But the atmosphere changes everything. You want to do well, especially when you\u2019re surrounded by five-star riders.
And then a lot of people know that I\u2019m \u2018the sister of\u2026\u2019, so maybe they expect something. I\u2019m just doing my best. I\u2019m not yet where I want to be, but I\u2019m working to get there.\u201d <\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thibeau, a very discreet advisor<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this first Saut Herm\u00e8s, Lauranne isn\u2019t alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She moves forward as a pair. As a family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201cYes, clearly. It\u2019s the first time we\u2019re competing together at an event of this scale with my sister.
At first, she was selected and I wasn\u2019t\u2026 so I was almost a bit jealous. (smile) But no, she fully deserves her place. This kind of event is completely different. You learn so much just by watching the best riders perform here.
And in the end, I also got to be part of it. So it makes the experience even nicer.\u201d<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Thibeau hadn\u2019t had a spot at this Saut Herm\u00e8s, he probably wouldn\u2019t have come to watch his sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201cNot really, no. I would probably have been competing elsewhere, in Lier for example.
Lauranne is someone solid, she knows how to manage on her own. But of course, if needed, there\u2019s always someone in the family to be there.
Now that I\u2019m here and she\u2019s riding, it\u2019s obviously more practical.\u201d<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\"Thibeau<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A big brother\u2019s role (Thibeau has just turned 25), but almost invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Honestly, it\u2019s quite simple. She knows her job very well.
I mainly try to help her a bit with the courses, to give her confidence. We exchange impressions, we compare ideas. But in the end, she knows her horse and her feelings best.
If I can add a little something, great. But she\u2019s already capable of building her own plan.\u201d <\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In course walks, details make the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201cYes, of course. We\u2019ve been trained to be autonomous, but having a second opinion is still important.
Sometimes just confirming an idea or adjusting a detail can make the difference. And if I can help at that level, that\u2019s already very good.\u201d<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And above all, no rivalry at this event. Not even comparing performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201c(laughs) No, not really. We\u2019re not even in direct competition, so that changes things.
Maybe it would be different in a jump-off together\u2026 but here, the idea is mainly to support each other. We both just hope to have a good show.\u201d <\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the day, Lauranne Spits doesn\u2019t lose sight of why she\u2019s here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201cA lot of things. Every competition teaches you something, whether it\u2019s good or bad. You never come home without having improved.
