Winner of last Sunday\u2019s CSI5* Grand Prix in Fontainebleau, Thibeau Spits didn\u2019t just take a class\u2014he confirmed a partnership. With Impress-K van\u2019t Kattenheye Z, the Belgian rider has a championship horse on his hands, a partner built from the very start, a rare talent who barely jumps at home, values his peace, and prefers open spaces to forced affection. Portrait of a duo moving forward quietly. Well, almost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A win that felt inevitable<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fontainebleau didn\u2019t produce a miracle\u2014it confirmed a trend. Thibeau Spits and Impress-K van\u2019t Kattenheye Z claimed the CSI5* Grand Prix on Sunday, the only double clear in a six-horse jump-off, ahead of Martin Fuchs and Marie Demonte. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Spits, no over-the-top celebration. More a sense of validation.\n\u201cThis victory gives me a lot of confidence for the whole season,\u201d he explains.\nWith typical Belgian lucidity, \u00ab He adds: \u201cNow it will be difficult to keep this level, because we\u2019re already doing everything needed to have him there. Maintaining it over time\u2014that\u2019s probably the hardest part.\u201d<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spits didn\u2019t meet Impress at the top level. He built him. I\u2019ve done everything with him. I started riding him right after he was broken in. I know him by heart. <\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the stable, Impress isn\u2019t just another horse. He\u2019s the sporting boss. The one everything revolves around, schedule, routine, even the way the whole team breathes. \u00ab The one who gets the most attention. He\u2019s clearly number one. <\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boss likes to be left alone<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t confuse superstar with attention-seeker. Impress is kind, but not needy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab He\u2019s a horse who likes to stay a bit in his own world. He doesn\u2019t really like too much attention. He prefers being a bit on his own,\u201d says Spits. In other words: he accepts care, not constant fuss.\n\u201cHe doesn\u2019t want to be bothered too much. Exactly. <\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A stallion, yes, but not a clich\u00e9. This year, Spits feels him stronger, more mature, more relaxed.\n\u201cHe\u2019s more relaxed in his head. He doesn\u2019t get worked up in the stable or at home. It\u2019s very important for him to have a place where he can rest. \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At home, he barely jumps<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The secret? Not recreating five-star tracks in the home arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Honestly, he almost never jumps at home,\u201d<\/em> \u00bb, Spits says. Maybe a few small exercises, poles on the ground, but no repetition for the sake of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead: galloping. A track through the woods, fitness, air, freedom.\n\u201cI try to go there twice a week. It\u2019s good for his strength.\u201d And just as important: for his mind. When he only works in the arena, he becomes a bit dull. There, he works without getting too much in his head. <\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, Impress is prepared like an athlete who needs fresh air\u2014not like an office worker under neon lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between sport and breeding<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This season, Impress has been campaigned sparingly. He competed in \u2019s-Hertogenbosch, Paris and Fontainebleau, jumping clear in those Grand Prix classes. His schedule has also been shaped by his role as a breeding stallion, with dedicated periods for reproduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u201cIn the past, we had a few issues\u2014he could get a bit tired from it. Now he manages it much better. He comes back from breeding and he\u2019s very fresh. Maybe even a bit too fresh last weekend,\u201d Spits smiles. <\/em>\u00bb, sourit le Belge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fresh, but focused. Sharp, yet more mature. The kind of balance that turns a very good horse into a serious championship contender. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pressure of a top horse<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riding Impress isn\u2019t just an opportunity, it\u2019s a responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Every time you go in, you have a chance to win or be competitive. So you\u2019re even more focused than with another horse<\/em> .,\u201d says Spits. Course walking becomes sharper. Time allowed, options, invisible mistakes, everything matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because with a horse like this, excuses don\u2019t last long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aachen in sight<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next stops: Rome for the Nations Cup, then Madrid to stay in rhythm. And further down the road: Aachen. The FEI World Championships 2026 will take place in Aachen from August 11 to 23, with jumping scheduled from August 17 to 23. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spits stays grounded.\n\u201cWe\u2019re not there yet. I have to keep working, keep proving myself, try to be in form there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the idea is clear. And it fits Impress perfectly\u2014a horse for big arenas, grass, and gallop. \u00ab Aachen is maybe the biggest show in equestrian sport. Even if I was very young, I remember Jos Lansink winning the World Championship there. That\u2019s also where I rode my first five-star Nations Cup, with King (van Essene). t was super impressive. <\/em> A World Championship in Aachenis like a cycling World Championship on the Paris-Roubaix course. It\u2019s different. It\u2019s mythical.<\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Impress, everything feels a little different. And maybe this summer, the stallion will become mythical too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
