The CSI4* in M\u00e2con Chaintr\u00e9 had promised top sport. What it delivered was a masterclass from Gr\u00e9gory Cottard. Against a stacked field and a nine-horse jump-off, the French rider dominated the Grand Prix of the City of M\u00e2con aboard Hold Up de Val\u00e8me, leaving John Whitaker nearly four seconds behind. But beyond the victory lies the story of a homebred horse, a show that has become a benchmark on the circuit\u2026 and plenty of emotion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cottard Wrapped Up the Jump-Off Before It Had Really Started<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jump-off had barely begun when Gr\u00e9gory Cottard laid down a serious marker. A very serious one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riding Hold Up de Val\u00e8me (Thais de Pegase x Landsturm B), the Frenchman produced a breathtakingly smooth round, attacking every option before stopping the clock at 37.62 seconds \u2014 a time that quickly proved untouchable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even John Whitaker, one of the sport\u2019s greatest masters against the clock, had no answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British legend eventually finished second aboard Equine America Unick du Francport (Zandor Z x Helios de la Cour Z), ahead of Charlotte L\u00e9oni and Cyclone L\u2019Epivent (Ulix x Arp\u00e8ge Pierreville). But the gap said it all: nearly four seconds. At this level, that\u2019s an eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for Cottard, this victory meant far more than just another Grand Prix win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m really happy because Hold Up is a horse I bred myself. Seeing him win at this level today is incredibly emotional for me.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The French rider also admitted the win tasted a little like redemption after a frustrating week :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cI lacked a bit of luck earlier this week, so this Grand Prix feels like a bit of revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A first round that trapped riders without breaking them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Course designer C\u00e9dric Longis perfectly captured the spirit of the M\u00e2con weekend with a track that was technical, clever and fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirteen fences at 1.55m, several delicate lines, a tight enough time allowed to build pressure\u2026 and faults spread throughout the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Longis was fully satisfied with the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cNine clears and a lot of four-fault rounds, that was exactly my plan. I always try to create small mistakes all around the course.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And the traps worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olivier Perreau and Himalaya du Temple faulted at fence one. Rick Hemeryck left the final vertical on the floor. Denis Lynch missed the jump-off after a rail at number nine. Roger-Yves Bost finished on eight faults, while Marlon Modolo Zanotelli saw his place in the final disappear because of a single light touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Whitakers showed all their experience, Mark McAuley delivered an ideal early jump-off round, and Charlotte L\u00e9oni quietly continued her rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third place with Cyclone L\u2019Epivent confirmed the growing consistency of the young French rider at this level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not yet the fastest, but already one of the most reliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Cette troisi\u00e8me place me fait vraiment plaisir. C\u2019est ici notre deuxi\u00e8me Grand Prix de suite sans faute \u00bb, rappelait-elle.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Fully aware of her 14-year-old Selle Fran\u00e7ais gelding\u2019s strengths, L\u00e9oni is not rushing the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCyclone isn\u2019t naturally a very fast horse. We\u2019ll get there eventually in terms of speed, but for now I\u2019m focusing on clear rounds and I\u2019m completely satisfied with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Even John Whitaker already wants to come back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At nearly 71 years old, John Whitaker still moves through international shows like a classic Aston Martin: slightly vintage, endlessly elegant, and still capable of beating most of the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British rider leaves M\u00e2con with second place and, perhaps more importantly, a horse full of confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u00ab Of course I would have preferred to win, but my horse jumped unbelievably well. <\/em>\", he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Before praising the Burgundy show itself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u00ab The course was perfect. The whole weekend was excellent. I really hope to come back next year ! <\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

When a legend like Whitaker is already marking next year\u2019s edition in red on the calendar, it is rarely a bad sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e2con has entered another dimension<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In many ways, the real winner of the weekend may have been the show itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the last few seasons, the Jumping International de M\u00e2con Chaintr\u00e9 has steadily grown in stature. And this 2026 edition clearly felt like a turning point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C\u00e9dric Longis did not hide his enthusiasm:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThis show has become a reference in terms of facilities and overall quality. For course designers, it\u2019s a fantastic playground.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The riders shared the same feeling. Sanne Thijssen, winner earlier in the CSI4* 1.45m with Farah Z, described it as \u201ca fantastic show,\u201d praising an organisation that felt \u201ccalm, smooth and relaxing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And on the organisers\u2019 side, emotion was everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere was a huge crowd this afternoon and I think these images will stay with us forever,\u201d said Isabelle Breul, president of M\u00e2con Chaintr\u00e9 \u00c9v\u00e9nements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a deep field, packed grandstands and a spectacular Grand Prix, M\u00e2con is no longer simply another beautiful French CSI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has become one of the events riders circle in red on their calendars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
