Rome dreamed of a hero to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Piazza di Siena.\nIt found one in Piergiorgio Bucci.<\/strong>Riding Pallieter vd N.Ranch<\/strong>, the Italian delivered the only double clear of the Rolex Grand Prix and handed the Villa Borghese crowd a historic home victory. Fifty years old, World No. 28, and on a winning streak that refuses to end, Bucci continues to stack Grand Prix victories with remarkable consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eternal city was waiting for a national hero<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One hundred years of Piazza di Siena.\nOne hundred years of History, with a capital H.\nOne hundred years of champions carving their names into the legend of Villa Borghese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this Sunday, it was an Italian who brought Rome to its feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piergiorgio Bucci and Pallieter vd N.Ranch, the 11-year-old BWP stallion by Cornet Obolensky out of a Toulon mare, captured the Rolex Grand Prix by achieving what nobody else managed: two flawless rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Piergiorgio<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No jump-off.\nNo calculations.\nNo manufactured suspense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply the best combination of the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the rider from Abruzzo, the victory carried special meaning. Winning in Rome is already an achievement. Doing it during the centenary edition feels almost like a national symbol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vezzani had something tougher than dolce vita in ind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Grand Prix was anything but a leisurely Roman stroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Course designer Uliano Vezzani dressed the track for a celebration, but it quickly became clear that the festivities would be reserved for only the strongest of the forty-five starters. Technical, selective and demanding, the course asked plenty of questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belgian riders learned that the hard way. Nicola Philippaerts<\/strong> and Gadget Mouche<\/strong>, Gilles Thomas<\/strong> with Qiara de Kalvarie<\/strong> and Thibeau Spits<\/strong> with Impress-K van\u2019t Kattenheye Z<\/strong> all exited round one carrying eight faults. Emilie Conter<\/strong>'s bill was even steeper as she left the Roman arena with twelve faults<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or the French contingent, the afternoon felt almost like a remake of the Battle of Pavia. M\u00e9gane Moissonnier<\/strong> and Crooner Tame<\/strong> finished on eight faults,<\/strong>, Marie Demonte<\/strong> and Forban de B\u00e9liard<\/strong> on sixteen, while Nicolas Sers<\/strong> and Eleven de Riverland <\/strong>endured a genuine ordeal, eventually accumulating twenty-seven faults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outcome?\nJust seven clear rounds in the opening phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five additional combinations on four faults managed to snatch a ticket to round two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly, the line-up looked like the final of a major championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three Italians carrying local hopes: Martinengo Marquet<\/strong>, Piergiorgio Bucci.<\/strong> and Riccardo Pisani.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three Germans hoping to repeat their Aachen heroics: Sophie Hinners<\/strong>, Richard Vogel<\/strong> and J\u00f6rne Sprehe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On paper, anything was still possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the arena, much less so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A ruthless second round<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second round wasted no time setting the tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9s Azc\u00e1rraga elected to retire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khaled Almobty and Eduardo Trapote saw their ambitions disappear under eight faults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came the black streak. The long litany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

artinengo Marquet. Four faults.\nKraut. Four faults.\nMarilyn Little. Four faults.\nRichard Vogel. Four faults.\nJ\u00f6rne Sprehe. Four faults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even Sophie Hinners, whose partnership with Combella has looked almost untouchable in recent weeks, saw a place in the jump-off disappear after a mistake in the double combination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One by one, the contenders ran out of ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only one rider managed to solve the puzzle. Wilma<\/strong> McMahon<\/strong>. With Cicci BJN<\/strong>, the Swedish rider produced the only clear round of the second phase. But the four faults picked up in round one prevented her from extending the contest into a third act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That left only one man standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Only Double Clear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the end, only \"PG\" Bucci\u2014carrying the weight of an entire nation as Italy's last remaining representative\u2014managed to secure a second clear round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Focused.\nPrecise.\nFluid.\nPerfectly synchronized. Grazie mille. Arrivederci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No jump-off is needed when nobody can do better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of the year, Bucci and Pallieter vd N.Ranch have been collecting Grand Prix victories like others fill a Panini sticker album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early March, the pair captured the Valencia CSI3* Grand Prix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A month later, they claimed the CSI4* Grand Prix of Bedizzole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just five weeks ago, they raised the bar once again by winning the CSI5* Grand Prix of Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

hree levels.\nThree countries.\nFour Grand Prix victories. .Rome now completes the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always the same conclusion.\nPallieter wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the bigger the stars get, the less the horse seems to care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Italian appears to be riding at one of the highest levels of his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More importantly, he possesses a string that would make any national selector dream: Pallieter vd N.Ranch (11), Hantano (14) and Istanbul du C\u00e8dre (8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
