It had rained in Calgary, the clock was giving nothing away and only three combinations had found the exit without touching a pole. Not exactly the ideal moment to start shaking. Last to go in the jump-off of the CANA Cup, Lillie Keenan did precisely the opposite. Three survivors, not one more

At Spruce Meadows, even the midweek classes can sometimes feel like entrance exams.

On Thursday, in the International Ring, Leopoldo Palacios had prepared a 1.55m course serious enough to sort through the 54 combinations at the start. The rain that had fallen earlier in the day had given way to slightly kinder weather, but out on the track, nobody was exactly planning to hand out gifts.

The time allowed was tight. Very tight.

Result: only three combinations managed to complete the first round clear and earn their place in the jump-off.

Hinners applies the pressure, Maher secures it

Then there was still the small matter of going after the win.

As the first real benchmark in the jump-off, Sophie Hinners did not exactly leave the door wide open. With Iron Dames My Prins, l’Allemande signe un deuxième sans-faute et arrête le chrono à 43’’78. Propre, rapide, sérieux : le genre de tour qui oblige le dernier partant à sortir de sa zone de confort.

Ben Maher, for his part, chose a more measured score with Catelly. Le Britannique boucle lui aussi un double sans-faute, en 47’’11, et s’assure la troisième marche du podium.

That left Keenan.

Last to go, first at the finish

The small advantage of entering the ring last in a jump-off is that you know exactly what has to be done.

With victory and qualification for the CPKC ‘International’, presented by Rolex, at the end of the reins, Keenan could not exactly afford to improvise a sightseeing tour of the International Ring.

The American chose precision.

Kick On answered the call.

Clear, 41.03 seconds: case closed.

The CANA Cup went into the American combination’s pocket, along with something that mattered almost as much as the victory itself: a place in Spruce Meadows’ big Sunday appointment.

Kick On knows the tune

This success did not come out of nowhere either.

Keenan and Kick On have already spent plenty of time around major fixtures. The pair notably finished tenth in the 2026 World Cup Final in Fort Worth, after placing eleventh at the previous edition in Basel.

Calgary is not unfamiliar ground for them either. In July, during Spruce Meadows’ ‘North American’, they had already won the Jayman BUILT Cup, also contested over 1.55m.

In other words, Kick On seems to rather enjoy the great Canadian grass arenas.

“Our sport is also an art”

After her victory, Keenan summed up rather well what had just happened.

« What makes our sport so special is that it is also an art. It is based on this union between horse and rider, and you have to be able to create that under the pressure of the clock. »

On paper, it almost sounds like equestrian philosophy.

In the Spruce Meadows International Ring on Thursday, it was mainly an excellent recipe for winning.

Because between a demanding course, a time allowed tight enough to turn every stride into a small negotiation, and a jump-off where the slightest hesitation could prove expensive, Keenan and Kick On achieved exactly what is expected of the best: going fast without ever giving the impression of rushing.

Now for the big one

The CANA Cup carried particular value this week. The class was part of the Grand Prix qualifications, meaning the stakes went far beyond the blue ribbon and the lap of honour.

Avec cette victoire, Keenan s’ouvre les portes du CPKC ‘International’, présenté par Rolex, dimanche.

And there, the whole thing moves up another level.

At Spruce Meadows, earning your ticket is already a performance. Doing it with a horse in form, a clear round and a victory in the legs is probably the best possible way to arrive at the entrance.
