Stokmans at the helm: the Belgian federation changes pilot.

Publié par Sébastien Boulanger le 23/03/2026

Change of guard at the helm of the Royal Belgian Equestrian Federation. Bart Stokmans succeeds Stephan Detry as president. A transition in continuity, though not without its challenges, as Belgian equestrian sports are performing at full speed on the international stage.

A smooth handover

This appointment reflects a desire for continuity rather than disruption. No revolution has been announced, but rather a change of hands at the helm.

Detry: eight years to get things back on track

It is difficult to discuss this handover without mentioning Stephan Detry’s track record. He arrived with a clear mission: to put Belgian equestrian sport back on track, and he leaves behind a stabilized federation… and results.

Under his leadership, Belgium has firmly re-established itself among the leading nations, with a rising generation and consistent performances at major international events.

But Detry had made it clear himself: two terms, no more. He never hid his intention to step down at the right moment. (see our article “ Stephan Detry, eight years at the helm. How the Belgian federation became a solid institution again” here )

His appointment as president extends a rise that had already begun internally. He ticks all the boxes: field knowledge, network, and the ability to structure.

It remains to be seen how he will put his own stamp on things.

A federation to manage… in great shape

The timing is no coincidence. The federation is taking over a Belgian sport that is in full momentum: emerging young talents, competitive teams, and renewed international visibility.

But with success come expectations. Structuring high-level sport, supporting riders, balancing elite performance and grassroots development—the challenges are numerous.
