Philippaerts flips the script in Shanghai: first in, last man standing

Partir en premier dans un barrage à 19 ? En théorie, c’est se tirer une balle dans le pied. En pratique, Nicola Philippaerts en a fait une démonstration inverse. Dans un Grand Prix LGCT de Shanghai sous haute tension, le Belge a retourné la table avec Katanga van het Dingeshof. Une victoire entre maitrise et audace, au cœur d’un scénario brutal où seuls trois rescapés ont tenu debout.

First to go, last to laugh

Tous les belges ont réussi à tirer leur épingle du jeu en première manche de ce Grand Prix de Shanghai. Enfin, tous sauf un: Gilles Thomas (4 pts avec Luna van het Dennehof). Comme si les dieux du saut d’obstacles avaient décidé que Thomas avait déjà été à la fête plus qu’à son tour avec ses deux victoires à Shanghai ce week-end.

In a 19-strong jump-off, only Germany had more firepower than Belgium. Seven riders to four. And Philippaerts? He didn’t just set the tone, he blew everyone away from the outset. On his trusted Katanga van het Dingeshof (Cardento x Tornedo FCS), he laid down a no-nonsense round: tight lines, relentless gallop, no hesitation. Not reckless. Just pure efficiency.

Résultat : 45’’31, double sans-faute.

A real target. The kind that forces the rest to chase. And behind him? Eighteen riders lining up to take their shot.

Very quickly, though, the cracks began to show.

Only three survivors

Out of nineteen, just three would keep all the poles up.

Marcus Ehning s’accroche. Avec Coolio 42 (Casalito x Quidam de Revel, l’Allemand déroule proprement. Fluide. Expérimenté. Mais son 47’’14 le laisse à distance. Deuxième.

Then Antoine Ermann confirme. Le Français, en pleine ascension, garde la tête froide avec Jiamo VDS. 48’’08. Troisième. Et surtout, un podium qui pèse face à une telle concurrence.

Three clears. Not one more.

Brash too fast, Maher carried away

Nobody was spared. This jump-off was carnage. Rail after rail hit the sand, and with each one, Philippaerts’ position looked stronger.

Scott Brash pense avoir fait le plus dur. 43’’82 au chrono. Le plus rapide. Mais une barre sur la spa transformée en double. Bardaf. Quatrième place, comme un goût de déjà-vu.

Same story for a stacked list of heavyweights:
Simon Delestre (faute au n°4), Christian Ahlmann, Hans-Dieter Dreher ou encore Sophie Hinners… tous piégés par un barrage qui ne pardonne rien.

Nine four-faulters. A proper wipeout.

On voit alors un sérieux client partir sur un gros rythme. Victor Bettendorf par pour aller chercher le chrono du voisin du nord. Mais lui aussi part à la faute finalement. Et plutôt deux fois qu’une.

Pas plus de réussite pour Ben Maher avec sa nouvelle acquisition, l’ex monture de Marco Kutscher: Catelly. Dérobade à l’entrée du double…

No one would get near Philippaerts’ time. And suddenly, the unlikely scenario became reality: he wins, from the front, in a 19-rider jump-off. Not exactly the script everyone expected.

Si la prestation du cavalier belge à convaincu, ça n’aura pas été le cas pour tout le monde concernant celle du chef de piste, Peter Grant.
19 clears out of 40 in round one. A (very) long jump-off. Technical. Borderline over-demanding. Let’s just say there’s room for debate.

Katanga: heading for Aachen?

Beyond the headline, there’s a clear trend.
