There was plenty at stake: a $100,000 purse, a field packed with quality, and a course designed by one of the most respected course designers in the world. Yet at Temecula, Karl Cook left little room for suspense. The Californian produced a stunning one-two finish in the 1.45m Grand Prix, guiding both Baloucante di Luna and Heroes Kervec to the top two spots in one of the weekend’s toughest classes.
Seven survivors in Lima’s maze
When Anderson Lima sets a track, competitors know they had better come prepared.
The Brazilian-Mexican course designer, who notably built this season’s FEI World Cup Final courses, delivered a test worthy of his reputation for the $100,000 Grand Prix.
The verdict came quickly: out of 38 starters, only seven combinations managed to answer all the questions posed by the South American master technician.
A statistic that speaks volumes about the challenge presented on California’s coast.
And in this battle of attrition, one rider stood above the rest: Karl Cook.
Baloucante passes her biggest test yet
What looked like Baloucante di Luna’s first true examination at this level turned into a statement performance.
Produced by Kelly Cornelis, who rode the mare until last October, the 8-year-old daughter of Balou du Rouet and Canturano I delivered a composed and polished round to secure victory for her rider. As if that were not enough, Cook completed an impressive one-two by placing Heroes Kervec (Contendro I x HH Conrad) in second place.
A powerful demonstration of the extraordinary depth within the American rider’s string.
Behind Cook’s two mounts, Belgium’s Christopher Megahey rounded out the podium in a class where every detail mattered.
And just for good measure, Cook also finished sixth aboard Home Run (Spartacus TN x Concorde).
“I took the time it needed”
Following the victory, Cook emphasized the gradual development of his partnership with Baloucante.
“I took the time it needed to build the partnership, just as I did with Caracole and Foxy in previous years, particularly at the events organized by Ali Nilforushan.”
It is a philosophy that continues to pay dividends.
The American rider understands better than most that top horses are not made overnight. Patience and long-term development remain the cornerstones of his system.
Last year, Cook won this very same Temecula Grand Prix aboard Caracole de la Roque. Twelve months later, he finds himself back at the top with a new partner who appears ready to follow a similar path.
Rotterdam next on the agenda

Absent from this year’s Rome CSIO, Cook had a very good reason for remaining in California.
« I wasn’t in Rome this year, but I’ll be heading back to Europe for the Rotterdam CSIO. I preferred to stay here in California because my wife and I are expecting a baby. »
A brief family-focused interlude before returning to Europe’s biggest stages.
The Nilforushan model keeps growing
This victory is also a success story for an organizer whose circuit continues to expand at remarkable speed.
Ali Nilforushan, the driving force behind the Temecula, The Oaks, and Colorado Horse Park events, was understandably pleased with the outcome.

« My goal is to create opportunities for everyone, from amateur riders to top professionals, allowing them to compete in quality classes with attractive prize money. »
And the ambitions do not stop there.
« I’m continuing to invest in Temecula, The Oaks, and Colorado Horse Park. I still have many plans for 2027. »
To maintain that level of excellence, Nilforushan consistently brings in some of the sport’s most respected names. Anderson Lima, Olaf Petersen Jr., Leopoldo Palacios, Cédric Longis, Frank Van Humbeek, and Bernard Mathy are among the course designers regularly featured at his events, while Philippe Le Jeune Jr. oversees the sporting management.

Another weapon in Karl Cook’s arsenal
emecula’s victory extends far beyond the scope of a $100,000 Grand Prix.
More importantly, it confirms the emergence of Baloucante di Luna as one of the most exciting horses to watch in Cook’s stable. Given the Californian’s proven ability to develop horses into top-level performers, it is difficult not to view this result as the beginning of something even bigger.
In Temecula, Baloucante did more than win. She introduced herself.
