It takes a leader to kick things off in style at the 2026 Longines Global Champions Tour in Shanghai. And who better than the reigning 2025 overall champion to do it? Gilles Thomas wasted no time, claiming the opening class (1.60m speed) with Chuck Marienshof Z. A clean, convincing win — and already a statement for the rest of the Chinese weekend.

The perfect way to set the tone

He was already at ease in Shanghai last year, finishing second in the 2025 Grand Prix. This time, Gilles Thomas goes one better. No feeling-out phase for the rider from Meise. Right from the first major class of the weekend, Thomas set the benchmark. Riding Chuck Marienshof Z (Colestus x Emerald), winner of the 2025 Stockholm Grand Prix, he delivered a round that was both fast and controlled.

In a speed class where every stride matters, Thomas did what he does best: tight lines, a forward rhythm, no hesitation. The kind of round that tells you everything, a rider full of confidence, and a horse right at the peak of its game.

Stephex in pursuit, Brinkop delivers

Behind him, Kendra Claricia Brinkop didn’t hang around either. The Stephex Stables rider secured a strong second place with Replay van’t Paradijs, just nine years old, but already showing serious quality.

The pedigree says it all: Bamako de Muze x EmeraldBlood, power, and plenty left in the tank. Another clear sign: Stephex arrives in Shanghai with depth, and horses ready to compete at the very top, even the younger ones.

Spain completes the podium

Third place goes to Eduardo Alvarez Aznar with Qevita vd Bisschop (Vigo d’Arsouilles x Elvis ter Putte)A partnership that keeps building, and delivering. After podiums in Prague, Valencia and Abu Dhabi, they add Shanghai to the list.

Less flashy than Thomas, maybe, but highly efficient. And already well-positioned in the race for points.
